PhD student | Informatics Department, Athens University of Economics and Business and Research Fellow | Archimedes Unit, Athena Research Center

Georgios

Welcome! I am a PhD student in the Informatics Department at Athens University of Economics and Business, member of AUEB's NLP Group, which is part of the Information Processing laboratory and postgraduate research fellow at Archimedes Research Unit. My research interests include Natural Language Processing, focusing on Large Language Models, Biomedical Question Answering and Medical Imaging.

AUEB's NLP Group consistently obtains top positions in the ImageCLEFmedical Caption shared task, which requires classifying medical images in different modalities and predicting possible diseases, as well as generating diagnostic captions from medical images, as part of our work in image to text generation. Specifically, in recent years, we ranked:

About me
My main motivation in studying Deep Learning lies not only in the field’s promising application potentials but also in its underlying technical and scientific depth. I am currently a PhD student at Athens University of Economics and Business, focusing on multi-step textual entailment, as well as a member of the AUEB's NLP Group. I am very proud to be a scholar of the newly created Archimedes Unit of Athena Research Centre. Before joining Archimedes, I was research assistant at the NeuralDynamicsLab of KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where I completed the MSc in Machine Learning, working on Medical Imaging and Biomedical QA. KTH is the most prestigious technical university in Sweden, known for its continuing excellence in computer science and the fact that teaching is informed by research towards the development of advanced machine learning systems.

During my studies at KTH, while I was involved in the research carried out by NeuralDynamicsLab at SciLife, I have also received Best Performance Award in Spring Semester 2020-21; Karl Engvers' Award for my excellent performance in Deep Learning in Data Science, Project course in Individual Biology, as well as Speech and Language Processing in 2021. I published work in ReScience Journal and CLEF working notes in 2022 on behalf of the lab's participation in ImageCLEF medical 2022. I developed dense retrieval methods for biomedical documents, text generation pipelines, convolutional image encoders for diagnostic captioning and combinations of all the above.

Furthermore, I also conducted a six-month internship at Alpha Bank Optimization Group as a Machine Learning Engineer, to contribute to the bank's Alpha Blueprint Reform. I researched novel Deep Learning approaches related to Natural Language Processing and use them to develop element extraction and text generation architectures in Greek businesses corpora and explored potential improvements of Microsoft's FAST Search Algorithm for document and snippet retrieval.
